Calcium and Post Polio

Calcium is very important to polio survivors because calcium is necessary for muscle function. A calcium deficiency means less muscle movement is possible.

Calcium is required for transmitting brain signals through the spinal cord to appropriate nerves. Inadequate amounts of calcium result in an insufficient number of electrons to keep signals moving. Therefore without enough calcium, there is little electron firing of the nerves and little movement of muscles. An adequate supply of calcium is vitally important for maintaining mobility.

Polio survivors should also be aware that protein is required by the brain to fire signals to the spinal cord. Supplementing with digestive enzymes may help ensure that proteins get digested.

There is still a lot that needs to be understood about post polio. For now supplementing one's diet with calcium and digestive enzymes appears to be very important.
