What is Acid Reflux?

Health Care Professionals Disagree on the Root Cause of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux (heartburn) is a common irritation of the walls of the esophagus after eating. Acid reflux results when the lower espohageal sphincter does not remain closed when it should be. That allows stomach acid to go into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation.

Some health care practitioners believe acid reflux may be caused by obesity. A large abdomen puts pressure on the stomach, at times forcing food and stomach acid into the esophagus. Overeating and pregnancy also create extra pressure that may trigger acid reflux.

Acid reflux may have other causes, too. Whatever the reason, acid reflux always involves stomach acid getting into the esophagus. The walls of the esophagus are not designed to withstand strong acid such as that used for digestion. Severe chronic acid reflux may cause permanent damage if left untreated.
